Mentor Role:
As a mentor, your primary role is to provide guidance and support to your mentee based on his or her unique developmental needs. At different points in the relationship, you will take on some or the entire following role (s):
- Take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship
- Serve as a positive role model and friend
- Build self-esteem and motivation
- Help set goals and work toward accomplishing them
- Give positive feedback and encouragement
- Provide insights into possible opportunities
- Provide support on personal issues if appropriate
- Identify resources to help mentee enhance personal development and career growth
- Expand the mentee's network of contacts
Time Commitment:
- Make at least a one-year (school year) commitment
- Spend a minimum 2 hours per week one-to-one with a mentee
- Communicate with the mentee weekly
- Attend mentoring training program
- Attend mentor/mentee group events, mentor support groups, and program recognition events
Participation Requirements:
- Be interested in working with young people
- Be willing to adhere to all program policies and procedures
- Be willing to complete the application and the screening process
- Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments
- Attend mentor training sessions as prescribed
- Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff/teachers/submit activity information
- Have an acceptable criminal history background
- Not use illicit drugs, tobacco products, alcohol, or controlled substances
- Not be currently in treatment for substance abuse
- Have a non-addictive period of at least five years
- Value the mentee as a person;
- Develop mutual trust and respect;
- Maintain confidentiality
- Listen both to what is being said and how it is being said;
- Help the mentee solve his or her own problem
