The Importance of the After School Period
Our After School Programs are designed to help at-risk children in US cities, at an important time in the day when these children are all too often vulnerable to influences and situations that lead them down the wrong path in life. Music is at the core of many of our programs, creating an opportunity for us to have a far reaching impact on many aspects of their lives, including their education, creativity, discipline, and self esteem.
The after school period is a time when far too many children engage in unwanted behavior which can corrupt their morals and landing them in trouble. School days, between 3 pm and 6pm, are among the peek hours for teens to commit crimes, be involved in accidents as they walk home, be victims of crime, and smoke, drink and use drugs. Every day, huge numbers of children are out of school while their parents are at work and, this creates an “after-school gap”.
Hope For a New Generation's After School Programs provide an alternative to gangs and street life, allowing kids to develop new skills and helping to nurture their social skills.
The Goals and Benefits of our After School Programs
Our programs are designed to achieve a range of goals, and provide a number of benefits to the children who participate in them, including:
- To improve the standards of underprivileged children in pursuit of their education and also enhance their self-esteem and etiquette.
- To help underprivileged children deal with social and economic issues affecting them through counseling and also to alleviate their family problems from their school work.
- To build the interest of the children in positive ways outside class work.
- To enhance team work and co-operation among the children.
- To promote social, emotional and physical development of the children.
- To provide an alternative to gangs, street life, drugs and other unhealthy behaviour that at-risk children so easily fall in to during the after-school period.
- Discipline: High levels of discipline and self-esteem in school, peer, and family interactions is one of the factors that prevents youths against involving in risky behavior. Etiquette and communication skills lessons which are included in the programs list of activities shall be used to teach the children how to relate, coexist and co-operate with other people. The communication skills acquired will also come in handy when the children set out to study thus, boosting academic performance. Offering family counseling to the families of the children will alleviate the environmental stressors.
- Due to family issues, low-budget schools, lack of supplies and teacher lay-offs, many of those kids are struggling to compete educationally with their peers locally, nationally and globally. This Hope for a New Generation after school program will try to improve the performance of the children and nurture them as they grow up.
- Creativity and exercise. During selected times in the course of the program, the participants shall be introduced to both outdoor and indoor games. Word games enhance creativity by allowing children to make connections and establish relationships between different words. Also games of visual thinking encourage the use of critical thinking.
- To promote education, creativity and safety among underprivileged children and to ensure that those children benefit fully from both education and extra-curricular activities.
